As I was writing this, the sound of firecrackers went off without a break. Understandably, it will soon be the turn of the year according to the Gregorian calendar. A moment that is often the joy of many people to celebrate.
At this old age, I still have questions about the turn of the year that is always enlivened with celebrations in various forms,
What exactly are they celebrating out there and what makes them so happy when the year number on the calendar changes?
It's a clichéd rhetorical question that might not be useful at all because people will still celebrate the turn of the year, which they think will bring better hope. That is why every turn of the year, there are so many resolutions recorded by some people to solidify their steps in the following year even though some of these hopes are only limited to hopes that will be stale at the end of the coming year.
While enjoying the sound of firecrackers, I watched a movie about how to elevate the dignity of a woman.
The movie tells the story of a policeman's daughter whose father died in an accident. Her mother passed away first, leaving her alone.
She was eventually taken in by an acquaintance of her father's who she called Uncle, a middle-aged man who grew up in a strict parental upbringing and thus had stubborn principles.
The uncle's character influences the way he educates the orphaned little princess. He aspired to make her an independent woman, hence the military-like parenting.
Fast forward, the daughter became a strong woman who was not dependent on others. She was amazed when her uncle gave a short lecture at the girls' school.
In the short lecture, her uncle advised the female students that there were three things that no one should touch on their bodies. The breasts, buttocks, and private parts.
Anyone who touches these three parts should not be tolerated, even the closest person. This principle should be held tightly by every woman to maintain her dignity.
It must be realized that women are one of the most vulnerable groups in society. This is inseparable from the past history that considers women as merchandise that can be exchanged at any time. In its development, women are no more than working in three areas of power in the home environment.
There is a false assumption that if you want to advance in any field, women must have favorable conditions or what is often referred to as privilege.
Often privilege is associated with wealth, power, and conditions that sensually facilitate the person who has it. Children born to wealthy parents are considered to have privilege, as well as children of officials and so on.
Privilege is defined as "a special right, advantage, or immunity granted or available only to a particular person or group." This interpretation certainly has implications for the opposite condition so that people who are not destined to be in that condition are considered not to have privilege.
Let's assume it's true that privilege is beneficial. People who have it can easily get what they want. But even those who don't have it are lucky.
In the movie I watched, the princess had no privilege at all so she had only two choices, try to achieve success or stay in the condition she was in.
If someone who doesn't have privilege tries to achieve success, at least if they don't succeed, the initial condition remains the same so it's best to try as much as possible to climb the ladder of success without having to worry about what you don't have in the initial condition.
